"1 man + 1 woman = 1 couple" or "1 man + 1 man = 1 couple" or "1 woman + 1 woman = 1 couple" depends on your preferences

1 apple + 1 apple = 2 apples

1 fraction + 1 fraction = 1   (if the fraction used is half)

1 french door + 1 french door = 1 pair of french doors

 1 forequarter of beef + 1 forequarter of beef = half a bull or steer or cow.

1 egg + 1 egg = 1/6 of a carton of eggs.

etc.
