Bob - I only know the alphabet and a few key things. The alphabet is easy to learn, it sort of flows along using predominantly one hand to gesture on the other.

I have always wanted to learn AUSLAN but you can't do it by correspondence.

I learned and used sign language many years ago.  My grandmother's best friend had a deaf grandson and I learned it with him.  I found it very easy back then and can still read it a bit when you see them signing on TV.

But it is like most things...use it or lose it.  I have not used it seriously for over 40 years.

Actually you can. You can even get your Auslan Diploma by correspondence.

I have a relative who has been profoundly deaf since he was a toddler.  His parents made a conscious decision not to teach him sign language because they wanted him to be able to communicate with anybody, not just those who knew signing.  He lip reads to an amazing degree.  Except for some small mispronunciations, you can barely tell he is deaf most of the time.  And he is really useful when you want to know what someone on the other side of the room is saying 😉

Why can't you sign and be able to read lips as well?? I think a deaf person who can't communicate with another deaf person is stupid.
