iPhone help please....?

Hey there clever peeps...

Yesterday I got the new iPhone 5, in the shop the guy explained how to transfer all my contacts, data, pics etc from the old phone (iPhone 3) over...

Hs instructions sounded very simple, but when I attempted to do it this morning I didn't get far!

Has anyone had experience with this? And can you explain it to me in the easiest way...

My 2 teens are away, they usually help me out with tech probs!
And I can only check back periodically as I have a teething bubba needing my attention/comfort.

Did you have your old phone backed up "in the cloud"?  I can see all my contacts there.  How you go about then downloading them to the new phone, I'm not sure.
