With my 20 Isa's i've got 2 silkie Xs and 2 Aracuna X Leghorns and the silkie Xs are far bossier than my Isas. Mixed flock of mixed ages. But then, my birds free-range all day every day. No foxes here.

I don't know what we'll end up with panda, we spoke to a guy today that has sussex's but they won't be ready for another 3 weeks and at point of lay in like 12 weeks

Oh.. can I suggest that you figure out how many chooks you want and get them all now... while they are still young.

The worst thing with chooks is the pecking order when you introduce new ones to the coop. It can and often does get very nasty and they peck the heck out of the poor newbie.

OK thanks mad cats, so do you reckon if we got one at lay then two younger ones that would be alright?

As in does it matter if the ages differ or is it only when you add a new one to the coop?

I would like them younger but I wouldn't mind one at lay now IYKWIM

We only want 3 max.... and one duck

We have one now and one duck, I will try to take a photo. I don't even know if they males or females 😐

If you don't know which gender your chicken is, you need to check with your council if you can keep rooster or not.

Our council doesn't allow us keep roosters because we live in residential area.

Our little chick was a rooster and we had to surrender him to RSPCA. It made my husband cry. The chick was his baby.

Ohhh well we are rural syrups 🙂

My daughter's school got a new chicken coop this term. The same one in the picture.

They have 4 young chickens and the coop looks a bit small for 4. There is not much space for them to move around. I was checking them after dropping off my daughter this morning. They are pecking each other even they are young ones. I notice one of them hardly have her tail feathers left. Poor thing.

Hopefully they are all hens.

You can get the other two now... that will be fine.

there might be a bit of pecking to start with but with such a small number they should fall into line easy.

It is when you have say four big ones and go and toss in an extra in a few weeks.. they will all peck the new one...
