annie i'll try to explain to you what i have gathered
first off its probably best to go to the drop down menu top left 'board options' and click 'mark as read' so all the threads on that board gets marked as read
now there are two ways to indicate whether there are new posts in a topic and you should only click a thread with new posts that are new to you if you want to jump to the last post read or the first unread post
1)the thread heading links themselves can look bold or in regular, if they look bold that means there are new posts and if you click the bold links it will jump you to the last post read
if you click the regular links it will more then likely jump you to the top of the first page of that topic and you dont want that
2) take a close look at those red and grey balloons left of the thread headings
you should see a small curved white stripe top left inside of those balloons which indicate there are new posts, click on those threads will jump you to the last post read
click any thread without a white mark (red or grey balloons) will jump you to the top of the first page of that topic and you dont want that
those grey and red balloons and different textures in thread links make it all look pretty messy to me
i dont believe those red hot topic balloons are necessary and confuses the issue, the balloons should be just one colour
i try to focus on the white stripes only and ignore the colour differences of the balloons
