this asks would you be OK with a waiter blowing on your food before you ate it ?
There are now numerous studies (including Clemson Univ.) that show that blowing out candles on a birthday cake is indeed a vector for spreading both bacteria and viruses to others. While this is not very significant within a family -- who have probably already shared all or most of one another's germs -- it is significant when a houseful of visiting kids (or adults) eat cake that has had not just germs, but also saliva (ick) sprayed upon it.
There are several different issues:
1/ It's worse when kids do it.

]have read the link - very intareting ( from get smart in case you think I can't spell) we do breath in more germs every day so a few germs on the icing (so don't eat it) will hardly hurt anyone. If someone sneezes near you, and we have all had that happen, do you spray them with glen 20 ? We all just have to be aware, take all necessary precautions but please don't wrap your children in cotton wool.
Keep it nice, I might cry if you write anything upsetting (like not)

It was in response to it being about Gillard. Did Tony Abbott have a similar policy when he was Health Minister back in 2005 ?

I just heard Dr Phelps on Seven News saying that it is a good idea because something needs to be done about spreading sickness in pre-schools and for children who have a weakened immune system exposure to germs could be life threatening.
