Politicians are an untrustworthy, opportunistic breed at best and let's face it, we only vote for any particular one of them out of considered self interest.

There I must agree. i have known quite a few of them from all parties and they all have  what you have described in common or if they do not they either acquire it of resign and are out of the loop

Out of all the ones that i have known only 2 have resigned as objectors

Perhaps look at the whole sentence “There will be no carbon tax under a government I lead but let me be perfectly clear, I will introduce a price on carbon and move on to an emissions trading scheme.” or another "if you want to price carbon, why not do it with a simple tax?" TA
