Another reason I suspect Ellie's husband is that he and Nigel are both  tall, bald, and of roughly similar build, so although .Susan was adamant it was Nigel she saw on the beach, she could well have mistaken one for the other, in the dark.

Also, the priest said he had informed' both sets of parents' about the fight between Danny and Tom, but Ellie insisted she didn't know they'd quarreled, so maybe her husband was told but didn't bother to let her know.

There is also the old saying ' pick the person who has no real purpose in the story, eliminate the red herrings (like the psychic guy, Sharon, her son and the newsagent guy) and the one left is probably the murderer'.......when you think about it, apart from a child minding role while Ellie is being a cop, her husband is sort of redundant to the story line - unless he is the murderer
