the bad old 50s. where you could have a one income family, buy a home, have 3 or 4 kids and send them all to college

compared to modern life of two incomes, working 12 hours a day just to to keep a roof over your head and social media where everyone can tear apart everything one says. yaaaay for progress

It was not really that easy; in 50s and 60s and even the 70s people could live on one in income and buy a house only after many rears of saving up for the deposit - was it 20% or 25% that was usually required?  I know girls who left school at 16, working at the local shop for peanuts but putting money away for a deposit for a house 'when they get married'.  Many people did save up for house deposit by living in a rented flat with few second hand sticks of furniture, to buy a TV and fridge was something they had to save up for, and often get 2nd hand.  The houses were also just ordinary 3 bedroom, not 5/6 bedrooms and multiple bathrooms mac mansions.  Many people bought very ordinary old house in need of lot of work as their first home, and took years to do it up.  They did not have a TV in every room, they did not buy kids designer clothing and mobiles, and the kids did not have so many toys like they do now.  We have now so much more, we expect even more, and blame the government when our expectations fall short.
