A man has been taken to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition after crashing his "motorised bar stool" in Puhoi about 50 kilometres north of Auckland this afternoon.

Police were called to Puhoi Rd about 1.45pm after the man crashed.

The 62-year-old had left the Puhoi Pub on the motorised bar stool - a go-kart with a bar stool on top.

He wasn't wearing a helmet and fell to the road, suffering serious head injuries.

No other vehicles were involved.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

"Whether alcohol was involved will be part of our investigation," Inspector Mark Fergus, road policing manager of the Waitemata police, said.

"The vehicle was not road-legal and we've seized it so it can be mechanically examined.

"An investigation is also under way into who actually owns the mechanical bar stool."
