it is pushed for by men.......maybe it is because their"performance"is not good. so if the female can't orgasm they can't get blamed for it.

I suspect it is also to ensure that women don't stray from the marriage bed. There is an old saying 'It's a wise man who knows his own father' and in male dominant societies where DNA testing is not available,  I suspect men live with a paranoia about ensuring that their bloodline really is just that. If a woman finds sexual congress painful and unpleasant she is less likely to be unfaithful.

You shouldn't challenge someone else's cultural or religious belief. It's offensive to them;\   They don't need to justify why they do it as long as they believe it's right.

there is an exception to every rule and brutality is one.  this is an unacceptable practice and needs to be ceased.  it is important to realise though that the procedure is carried out by the female relatives of the young girls and that many men oppose the action.  it not only jeopardises a young woman's sexual health but her life.  99% of young women are being mutilated in some countries and allowing the practice in Australia is simply wrong.

No One should allow  this sort of torture, for any reason, religious or political.

They stitch up the girls as well and the husband cuts the opening on the wedding night, no better then torture.

Teddy, it is NOT allowed in Australia. It is illegal and anyone caught practising it is prosecuted.

But how do they know any different if that is how they have been raised? I am not commenting on right or wrong here, myself - think it is barbaric - but right or wrong it is their way so I guess we can be as horrified as we like, we have no rights to stop them.

Not only do we have the right but an obligation. I think FGM  comes under The right to be free from all forms of discrimination against women  according to Human Rights Commission/Convention on the Rights of the Child

There is a movie about her life. I sarted watching it one night not knowing what it was about. The circumcision scene would rate as one of the most horrific things I've seen in a movie, probably moreso because it was true.
