Can someone tell me please, when you have to add water to your car's thingie, do you have to have the engine running?

It's my sons car and it just started to over heat as he got home.  Just waiting for it to call down but he thinks you need to have the engine running and I can't remember whether you do.

Joono

hmmm I don't really know Joono, can you google it??

I was just googling Deb and some say yes and some say no.

I think that if the engine is hot it should be running but if it is cooled down then no, you don't.  I'm getting him to call ukw because does it have to be coolant and if so is it diluted.  Doh!  I'm not good at this stuff.

Joono

I thought when it's cooled down too, but I'm no expert

I already killed one car doing this so I think I will stay out of it.  All I know is that you don't take the cap off while it's hot.

Joono

You need to cool the engine first, Joono, or it can crack. You don't need to have the engine running.

If he has a hole in his radiator you can put ground white pepper in and it will stop the leak. A bush mechanic taught me that when my car was overheating and it worked a treat lol. I nearly keeled over when he grabbed a packet of pepper and tipped it into my radiator lol

.

Thanks Karen.  That is what I thought but I had no idea about the pepper!

If it's leaking it's a slow leak.  As long as he checks it now and then it's ok at this stage.
