To me it makes sense to reply to a comment made without the added bias or prejudice of the commentor's gender.
The dividing line between the multiplicity of perceived genders here is nebulous to say the least.
it does matter if you want to marry that person (unless you are bi-sexual, then of course it doesn't matter).
