Thanks for that Joono - looks like my memoery isn't quite as good as I thought it was.

What I do remember about those trips was that when you passed another car on the dirt, the done thing was for the driver or passenger  to lean forward and press splayed  fingers against the the windscreen. This was supposed to prevent it from shattering in the event of a stone hitting it. I don't know how effective it was but everybody did it and it was known as the Nullarbor Salute
