Just use 1/2-a cup of white vinegar (or 1 if big) , or better still  1 - 2 tablespoons  of citric acid for every litre of water  and run it through a couple of cycles. then a couple of rinses.

The slightly acid content  neutralises/removes the scale which is alkaline.
