For the same reason:

 

RBT checks are given to everyone .. the majority of drivers do not drink and drive over the limit.

 

Hotels require a security bond on check in - the majority of guests don't trash their rooms

Margo I believe they ask everybody so that they don't look to be targeting a few? A have a very close friend who's baby was dropped by her brother and it fractured her skull, my friend was inconsolable when welfare was called in, until they explained to her that everyone gets reported to catch the few guilty ones. Same same?

It takes a lot less time & energy to just  open your bag when asked and move on, than to make a fuss, complain about it to everyone you met the rest of that week (those who hear the complaints don't care less anyway) and to whinge about it on a forum.

that has been the case for a long time now....at least 20yrs, when I worked for one of the major banks.

 

it may have not necessarily been insurance but certainly there has always been pressure to sell other products, just like add-ons in retail.

Yes, they do and not necessarily in big retail stores.  I know a small handbag shop that does have that condition.

Why not? Some handbags you could fit heaps in. Easy to slip a DVD or something that size in a regular handbag.

 

Have you any proof that no shoplifted goods have ever been found in a customers handbag/shopping bag in Australia ever?

 

There are petty shoplifters, opportunistic shop lifters,'professional' shoplifters, juvenile shoplifters.

 

I wouldn't expect professional shoplifters to nick a $12 DVD in their handbags though.

 

I was in Wgong Myer store, shoe dept.. where there were some security staff talking to others by mobile.. keeping track of a woman who they had seen steal some shoes.

 

They have to wait until the person leaves the store to intercept them...so monitor them till they do that.

The point is that they check handbags up to a certain size. Some of the smaller bags or pockets can hold some very expensive stuff, especially cosmetics, perfumes and jewellery. I find bag searches useless and a waste of time, money and staff.

If they didn't check everyone, people would complain about being discriminated against.
