I wonder how long they intend to keep the figures from the UN

The UN refugee agency says it is awaiting an explanation from the Australian Government over reports asylum seeker boats have been forcibly returned to Indonesia.

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is warning such actions may place Australia in breach of its obligations under international law. “UNHCR is seeking details from the Australian parties about these recent reports,” said spokesman Babar Baloch.

But Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison, has insisted that “border protection is a matter of national sovereignty”. “The Government is taking the steps necessary to protect our borders consistent with our domestic laws and international obligations,” he said in a statement. “The UNHCR has been a long term opponent and critic of the Coalition’s strong border protection policies both in Government and in Opposition.”

“For the UNHCR it’s a very concerning policy or practice if it involves pushing asylum seeker boats back out to sea without proper consideration of individuals who need international protection,” said Mr Baloch.

“Any such approach would raise significant issues and potentially could place Australia in breach of its obligations under the Refugee Convention and international law.

“If people who are in need for international protection seek a country’s safety, then they must be allowed to go through a process which helps to determine if these people are in need.”

loooook out Clive's on the case

Mr Palmer supports allowing asylum seekers to fly to Australia and be quickly processed at airports.

Under his plan, it would be up to an asylum seeker to make their case that they are a genuine refugee.

If the applicant’s claims were rejected then they will be flown home, but if they are accepted Mr Palmer believes they

should then be given access to welfare and allowed to work.

I heard S H Young making similar comments to yours, the other day.   She continued on about their humane policy etc etc....I went searching for what the policy actually is, the only thing I could understand was increasing the refugee intake, maybe, still not having an understanding of the actual process and how those decisions are made.  The rest of their Plan of Action, and I'm not sure if its just me, but I could not understand, at all, how it could ever be practically applied.

I thought Rudd came up with a good plan.

prime minister abbott is a success...get with the winners

funny, i hate the rudd/now abbott plan . i much prefer the greens approach. when looked at neither make sense, but the green plan is easier to live with. its what we should do, not what the worst among us demand we do.

the greens?

are they still around?

they said the same about the nationals .

The Greens were firmly planted in the ground but as fortune would have it that ground is devoid of the sustenance that feeds them and allow germination 🙂

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Fair enough.  How is the Greens' plan going to work?
