Most Aussies are actually good people and consider supporters of cruelty as "unAustralian".
wow thats a verbal blast full of abuse..... seems the majority of Aussies are wrong and only the minority lefties are right...... But thats only in the leftie world........ and they are the minority
JMK Why do you have to get abusive in your reply and call people derogatory names.......
JMK you are in the minority... get used to it as the people of Australia spoke in September 2013 and labor lost real bad
That poll was done by the Fairfax group, you know the friend of the left.... makes you wonder about the lefties now doesnt it

- We will increase Australia's humanitarian intake to 30,000, which will make a difference and provide hope to people waiting.
- By resettling to Australia an emergency intake of 10,000 more genuine refugees from our region, we can show refugees that there is a ‘regular’ path to a safe life.
- 3,800 of the new places should go to urgently resettling assessed refugees directly from our immediate region including Indonesia as recommended by the Houston Panel. The Government hasn’t acted on that recommendation and only accepted 600 refugees from Indonesia this year despite the large backlog of waiting refugees.
- An extra $70 million per year in emergency funding for safe assessment centres in Indonesia would provide shelter and welfare services to refugees while they wait for assessment and resettlement
- We would boost the capacity of the UNHCR in Indonesia and Malaysia to speed up refugee assessments and resettlements.
- We would shut down all offshore detention in Nauru and PNG, with Australia to assess the claims of people who arrive by boat.
- No children should be in offshore detention or in detention in Australia.
If they are true asylum seekers, then is there a possibility that if the peace talks in Burma are successful that they will no longer require asylum?
There are already plans to assist in the physical relocation of refugees in Thai Refugee camps back into Burma and a lot of work, fundraising and planning is going into assisting them in reintering and reestablishing their former communities.
If this happens, wouldn't it be a waste to process them now when a go ahead for resettlement in their homes is expected by mid year?
Wouldn't this money be better spent supporting their new government and strengthening it in order to retain peace and safety in their country of origin?
Wouldn't this money be better spent in helping to provide the things neccessary for people with nothing to resestablish their lives? Things like houses, toasters, beds, education, jobs...
Wouldn't this money be better spent in helping to train people who for 60 years have had little training in order to assist them in becoming contributing members of their new community?

That might slow down the exodus from Burma. It's hardly going to stop those who flee other war zones in fear of their lives.

I understand that. But that's a major source of refugees, from and through Indonesia.
If it stops from there, it might make the numbers more manageable from other parts of the world.
That's what I'm thinking.
