Communism - the extreme form of Socialism - is probably the most altruistic ideology there is, and if it worked the world would be a much better place. Unfortunately it can only work when every member of the commune agrees to work for the greater good of the community rather than simply for themselves - and human nature being what it is there will always be those who want more than their fair share - both of wealth and power.
It has been said that the only places where you will find true Communism are convents and monasteries.
