Puzzle #3

A man goes into a bar in Melbourne. "Glass of beer" he says to the bartender. "Light or special?", asks the bartender. "What's the difference?", asks the man. "Light is 90 cents, special is $1" replies the bartender. "I'll have the special", says the man, placing the $1 on the counter.

Another man comes into the bar. "Glass of beer please" he says, placing $1 on the counter. The bartender gives him the special.

How does the bartender know he doesn't want the light?

Because he's Richo? 🙂

sorry but Richo wasn' there.

The money was in loose coins. If he'd wanted light he'd have put down 10c less.

he knew the price and didn't proffer the correct change for a light beer. He put down $1 inferring that was the beer he wanted.

Correct! 🙂

Man 1. put down $1 coin

Man 2. put down 50 cents, 2 x 20 cents and 10 cent coin. therefore is was obvious he wanted the special.

how do you know that from the info given?

That's how the bartender knew that man 2 wanted the special. If man 2 put down a $1 coin that would have caused doubt in the bartender as he could want to buy the 90 cent beer and get 10 cent change, but because he put down 50 cents, two 20 cents and a 10 cent coin, the bartender was absolutely sure he wanted the more expensive beer, the special.

Man 2 could also have put down 4 x 20c and 2 x 10c coins, or even 20 x 5c coins for that matter (amongst many other combinations).

me thinks that is why they are called 'brain teasers  workouts' LOL
