Karabegovich was originally facing 12 charges but the charges were revised today.


He was bailed on a $500,000 surety with strict bail conditions, including a night-time curfew and daily reporting to police.

Race discrimination commissioner Helen Szoke says people who feel they have been vilified must have legal protections.


 


Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has again promised that he will dump part of the Racial Discrimination Act prohibiting statements that offend or intimidate people on racial grounds.


Conservative columnist Andrew Bolt was prosecuted under that section last year and Mr Abbott says it undermines free speech.
