Sorry lobs I didn't mean to kill your thread, and yes I know that was not really what it was all about.

It's just that when sin was saying how people didn't consider themselves anything other than American rather than say African American etc, I was thinking wouldn't it be great if that is what everyone did and then there would be no racism. Still celebrate the different cultures though.

I used to teach esl to refugees in the late 70's. I had a varied group and on Fridays we would all bring in food from our own culture and have a smorgesboard lunch.

We were a happy group even though we could barely understand a word at first

In case you weren't  aware, I'm a Yank....It's 6:30am here in New York and I'm having some coffee.... your comments was the first thing I read. I thought that story was great and shows there is hope for humans.

Our children are raised in front of TVs and computer monitors. They think their ancestors came from Sesame Street. And that they used to live in Pee Wee's Playhouse.

I have to ask because I was thinking about it since this morning when Lobs posted this thread.  

Is the KKK still active in America or are they pretty much outlawed?  We have had our own murderous racist groups in Australia even as recently as the 1980's.

Yes, the KKK is still active. So are The Black Panthers. We still have freedom of speech in this country. It's only some activities that are outlawed. And those activities are outlawed for everyone. Not just these organizations.

At least you still have gun laws.

That was probably unfair.  It just seems like any man woman or child can get their hands on a gun these days.  Why hasn't anything been done about gun legislation yet?
