No matter how small the end profit of this tax is, it does go towards terrorism. It's allright for many on here to ignore it but if PM Abbott imposed NEW a tax on ALL foodstuffs without it going to the people for scrutiny, getting it passed through parliament and making it law then where would be uproar.
This is a hidden tax, it is unconstitutional, it goes partway to funding terrorism.
This 'tax" as you like to call it is ONLY imposed on those who CHOOSE to purchase goods carrying an official Halal certified sticker. If you choose NOT to purchase these goods how are you paying this "tax"?
If I CHOOSE to purchase goods with an Organic accreditation - the cost of which the producer has presumably included in the purchase price - am I therebye paying an organic tax which has been imposed, without my consent, on EVERYONE?
If you never buy goods carrying an official Halal certified label then not a cent of your grocery money will EVER be in danger of supporting terrorism. It's that simple.

certification is not a tax.
each year the company I work for spends more than $100000 to comply with and obtain food safety certification to supply Woolworths and Coles. is this a tax as well. we don't obsorb this cost. it is passed on.
BTW these food safety certifications are way over the top

It is not TAX and it is NOT imposed, manufacturers are free to get the certificate or not, they do it because it makes business sense. And you are free not to buy certified food; just as you are free not to buy anything "organic" or certified "nut free".

In the context of what some have posted on this thread certified "nut free" says it all.
Sorry Nova for stealing your thunder. Couldn't help myself.

Any accreditation costs money, that cost is passed onto the customer whether they buy halal or not.
So this is a hidden tax and some of the proceeds from it go to funding terrorism. That is fact, that is the logical conclusion from this tax that is imposed on just about every foodstuff one wants to purchase.
Companies and suppliers are forced to take this accreditation at the peril of a few here who hold sway.
Why is non muslim food, food no muslims buy, now halal?? that is the question and why do so many products today that have nothing to do with halal now carry the label.
That is the questin

Do you understand the difference between Halal and Halal certified?
As Azurline said, hala simpluy means "premitted"
Food which Muslim's are not allowed to eat can NEVER be halal.
Food which Muslims may CHOOSE not to eat, can still be halal- i'e' they could eat it if they wished but they choose not to.
For Muslims ALL foodstuff has to do with halal - either it is halal or it isn't
.
Some foodstuffs carry an halal label as a marketing ploy - the producers hope that by labelling it halal their Muslim customers, who might not otherwise think of buying it, may be enticed into doing so.

Forced?
I'd like some proof that there has been any concerted effort from Muslims (or Jews) to have food certified halal. I have searched and can't find a single newspaper article where a muslim leader or group has demanded or even asked politely that supermarkets change their strategies to include them.
If you have an issue with it then I suggest you take it up with the companies themselves.
This is not a muslim issue. This is a greedy corporations issue.

I would just compare it to people who sell eggs, barn laid, free range or caged eggs.....................
People who are home sewers and advertise "pet free home"
