The first Woolworth store was opened by Frank Winfield Woolworth on February 22, 1878, as "Woolworth's Great Five Cent Store" in Utica, New York.

Wiki, so it must be right.
Woolworths Limited was founded in September of 1924, originally under the name "Wallworths Bazzaar Ltd", a play on the internationally renown F. W. Woolworth name. After discovering the name had not been registered in Australia, and Woolworths had no plans for overseas expansion, the company became "Woolworths Limited" on 22 September 1924.[5]
And (so it's part American, lol).....
In 1982, Woolworths acquired two Tasmanian grocery brands: Roelf Vos and Purity. The biggest buyout from Woolworths came in 1985, after American supermarket giant "Safeway" had amalgamated with an independently owned Victorian supermarket in 1961; establishing the Safeway brand in Australia. Woolworths took over Safeway Australia in 1985, which had stores in Victoria and Queensland, the Woolworths name was affixed to the Queensland stores with the Victorian stores remaining as Safeway, with their identity newly stylised to match the Woolworths brand.[9] Following the rebranding in 2008, Woolworths began phasing out their Victorian Safeway stores; rebranding them as Woolworths supermarkets.

It was a copy cat of the US stores not a subsidiary of the US stores. They should have registered their name 😄

You all "argued" while I slept and gave me something to read with my morning coffee.
What was so hard to just say it was aimed at muslims from the start?
Will this thread still be here when I get back from work? 1 warning already, lol.
I have a 2 hour drive to Manhattan, which is only 30 minutes away. ![]()

@karliandjacko wrote:No, they started as an Australian Company and remain so.
They're not related to the USA Woolworths in any way, other than that they stole the name 😄
Correct, nor are they related to South Africa Woolworths ( which is taking over David Jones, and already has Witchery, Mimco and some other Aust brands)

Hello, everyone. This discussion is getting a little too interpersonal. For the last time, could we please communicate with a more civil tone . Thanks!

"I have seen the memorial at Pearl Harbour and the Tee shirts with the red dot and Japanese writing of "the divine wind" sold by the millions.
Now that is offensive and thoughtless to see that tee shirt but it wasn't banned in Hawaii.
As for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour? that was war more than racism, the American people suffered a mighty blow and they didn't deserve it.
Careful of the hornets nest when you kick America and good on them, that's as it should be, they love their country and are fiercely patriotic, that is their strengh.
Some on here could learn something from American history before they shoot their mouths off about our country and our flag."
I know I thanked you once for the kind words. But thanks again, well said.... I'm a guest here, and don't want to ruffle any feathers. You know us Americans get a bad enough rap for being warmongers. Even when it's just. 😉

The US imposed an oil embargo on Japan, threatening to suffocate her economy, so I am wondering why the US was surprised at the attack.
