Just wondering about the Irish poor. Prior to the potato famine potatoes were the major part of their diet. I never heard that they were fatties.

All the fatties went to NY.

The famine had an effect.

Spent some lovely time in Eire in the early 70s - don't remember an overload of fatties.

LOL. at the NY fatties.

I would like to have had some time in Ireland. Not to be though.

If ever a country lived up to its other name - Ireland is the Emerald Isle.

Some of the most beautiful people I have ever had the good fortune to meet.

Such poverty - such enjoyment of life - having very very little - nothing seemed to keep them down.

This was 70s - IRA time in England & Ireland.

Great stories of my stay - as an Australian - closest town was a bicycle ride of 7kms approx - ok sober - but always got good help when time to go home.

The bike another story - I used to push it - easier than riding it.

Potatoes are very nutritious:

It’s a surprise for many to discover one medium potato (5.3 oz) with the skin contains:

  • 45 percent of the daily value for vitamin C
  • More potassium (620 mg) than even bananas, spinach, or broccoli;
  • 10 percent of the daily value of B6;
  • Trace amounts of thiamine, riboflavin, folate, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, and zinc

…and all this for just 110 calories and no fat, sodium orcholesterol.

Potatoes also contain antioxidants.

I like those baked spuds you get from the show and places, and they fill them with mince or coleslaw and sourcream or grated cheese etc.

The first time I had one was when I moved to Broken Hill, the Big W shopping centre had a Baked spud seller in it.

Yummm, it was the best I've ever had.

Pimpy that sounds like real FA food.

Fat people eat potatoes. It is that simple. Why doesn't anyone get it. We have all been fooled into thinking we must eat more carb. You will not die if you eat no carb.

That explains all the fat people in Ireland in the 1840's..........
