BEND, Ore. — A Bend woman accidentally shot her husband when her Derringer fell out of her pocket, hit the floor and fired.

KTVZ reports it happened Thursday at a McDonald’s restaurant, and about 15 other customers who were inside at the time were startled by the gunfire.

Lt. Chris Carney says 47-year-old Richard Lee Cooper and 48-year-old Barbara Annette Masters were in the dining area when she leaned forward and the gun hit the floor. The impact caused the .22-caliber gun to fire, hitting Cooper in the abdomen. He was taken to St. Charles-Bend hospital in serious condition.

Masters was cited on assault and reckless endangering charges and released.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Police arrested a 38-year-old Oregon City man Friday after they said he shot and killed his wife last month and then turned the gun on himself.

Police arrested Raymond Joseph Johnson at about 4:30 p.m. at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, where he was recovering from his gunshot wound.

A Florida man convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a teenager during an argument over loud music has been sentenced to life in prison.

Michael Dunn, 47, was convicted last month in his second trial, after the first trial ended in a deadlocked jury. He was charged with premeditated murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. Prosecutors said Dunn, who is white, fired 10 times into an SUV carrying four black teenagers, including Davis, in December 2012.

"Mr. Dunn, your life is effectively over," Circuit Court Judge Russell Healey said at the sentencing. "What is sad is that this case exemplifies that our society seems to have lost its way."

With all of its faults, I would far rather live in Australia with gun ownership restrictions than in the US with their laws.
