No but she is a criminal, was found guilty of a criminal act.

You'd also wonder at the Matilda publication's involvement in it.

No, I wouldn't wonder at that at all. Independent newspapers in Australia do a good job - publishing stories exposing a PM's daughter getting a $60 000 scholarship (not on merit) and exposing Prof. Barry Spurr.... look forward to what they come up with this year.

But don't you see this is the same principle?

Ms Freya was promised some sort of reward for exposing the emails that showed up Frances Abbot's employment terms with Whitehouse.

She has now been able to capitalise in the same way by being appointed by the Greens.

By favours granted and called in.

I already posted that I have no problem with the Greens or any other employer giving Freya a job.. she isn't  a mass murderer or international drug ring leader! Have some perspective.

We are talking about the "New Matilda" aren't we, or is there another Matilda publication?

If the scholarship had been declared they would have been no need or thoughts about exposing it.  I don't like the idea of criminalising whistle blowers who expose things which should be public knowledge and don't create a risk to anyone's safety.

Ms Freya was promised some sort of reward for exposing the emails that showed up Frances Abbot's employment terms with Whitehouse. Where is your proof that happened? Most people leak info because they believe it is in the publics interest to know it, not for personal  rewards.

She has now been able to capitalise in the same way by being appointed by the Greens.

That is ficitious, no proof of that at all.

Not the same principle to whatever you say it is to.. not sure what you mean there.

Freya plead guilty, got a good behaviour bond, conviction not recorded.. time to move on and start her working life.

Leaks about Barry Spurr - they weren't done by hacking, but a recipient(s) of his emails.... the person(s) who did leaked those, didn't do it for personal reward.

It's not about criminalising.

It's about returning favours.

You think Freya went snooping into other ppls emails accounts for nothing better to do?

She did it because she thought it right to do not to gain political favour later.

It's about returning favours. - you have yet to say anyting more than that, which is an assumption of yours? What are you basing that on?

You think Freya went snooping into other ppls emails accounts for nothing better to do?  She did it for the public interest.

there would be gossip at the college amongst the staff about the scholarship.. people resent 'wrongs'.

As pointed out above that is the reason -  'public interest' - behind most 'leaks'.. not personal gain or favours for the person that 'leaks' info.

You think she risked getting a jail sentence just so she could get a PART TIME job with the Greens??.. laughable.

Magistrate thinks different, icy

The magistrate noted the case had attracted a lot of publicity.

"I accept that the media attention has had a significant impact on Ms Newman's wellbeing," she said.

The court heard the case was quite different to a police officer leaking information from the police database, which would be much more serious.

"I accept that Ms Newman was motivated by a sense of injustice rather than a desire for personal notoriety, greed or any desire to embarrass the student," she said.

The magistrate also took into account Ms Newman's immaturity, saying she was 20-years-old at the time of the offence and still living at home with her parents.

Chris Graham - "People who act in the public interest should be afforded public protection."

NSW Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon confirmed Newman would be starting her two-day-per-week, paid internship in April.

Magistrate Teresa O'Sullivan

Ms O'Sullivan said other Whitehouse staff members had briefed Ms Newman in how she could access documents that detailed Ms Abbott's scholarship by using another staff member's log-in.

How was the public interest served by Ms Newman's actions?

So she let herself be used by someone who  just happened to know the right person on the staff  of the New Matilda to pass that information on to?

Sorry but that just makes it worse.
