Tony Abbott unveils $60m in federal funding for Tasmanian farm irrigation schemes

Tasmanian irrigation projects will receive $60 million in federal funding, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced.

The money will go towards five irrigation schemes across the state.

Mr Abbott made the announcement at the site of an irrigation scheme near Evandale in northern Tasmania.

He described Tasmania as a "clean, green producer of the best-quality food" and said he expected most of the new projects to be underway within 12 months.

"They are subject to final business cases but all the preliminary business cases indicate a strong cross-benefit result," he said.

The schemes are expected to unlock opportunities in dairy, wine, fruit and vegetables.

The funding is in addition to $30 million from state coffers, which will be used for five proposed irrigation schemes.

Premier Will Hodgman welcomed the federal commitment.

"There's tremendous confidence in the Tasmanian economy," he said.

"We're seeing more jobs created but we need to maintain the momentum."

The five new schemes will be based in Scottsdale, Swan Valley, Southern Central Highlands, Circular Head and North Esk.

Hope we can get back to growing our own food instead of importing disease-ridden **bleep** from overseas.

why does the LNP need to spend $12 billion on jets, 20 billion on subs and 400million per year on metadata storage when they claim we are in an emergency situation??

aren't they over-spending?

Why did Labor spend $billions on pink batts then spend $billions taking them out and we are still paying $billions for the  remedial  work.  Labors incompetence? no it's much worse than that,  it's criminal murder, they killed 4 young men, we can never bring them back.

But not to worry you got your free batts eh.

As if they give a toss about workplace deaths, unless they can gain political mileage out of it.

Would you mind providing some sort of proof to back up your claim that Labor spent billions pulling out the insulation that was installed, please?  And a bit about the billions that you claim is still being spent?   That sounds a bit like fibs.

So if your son went to work and didn't come home, ever, that would be who's fault??? oh yes, that would be Labor's fault,  RUDD ignored all warning for months.

So yes, we do give a toss about workplace deaths and to say otherwise is partisan hatred writ large.

STUDENTS with HECS debts who move overseas should pay at least $2000 a year off their bills, the architect of the scheme says, arguing that if they can afford to go to Europe, they can afford to pay off what they owe taxpayers.

Bruce Chapman, a professor at the Australian National University, said such a reform would be fair, feasible and could save the budget more than $50 million a year.

As the government begins to prepare its second budget, Mr Chapman told The Australian that university graduates leaving Australia for more than six months should be made to undertake to repay at least $2000 a year of their outstanding student loan debt.

The irrigation schemes have been in progress for about 5 years.  This is not some new idea of the abbotts.

If one of my children were killed in a workplace accident I would seek answers. I would not blame the PM of the time because it's not his job to supervise every work site in the country.

Workplace deaths are often caused by poor training, lack of concern for safety issues and complacency.

This whole Rudd RC fiasco was not for the familes it was purely a vehicle for an attack on Rudd.

These people DO NOT CARE how many are killed in the workplace.

Hot air.  The Aust Govt can't access Australians with student loans living overseas wages/tax paid, until they do something like have an agreement with each country then zip will be done.

icy - where did that assumption come from that you posted '' some grads choose marriage and having children instead of employment? (straight after graduating according to your earlier post)

Was it your thought? Either your or someone elses - either way - do you seriously believe that happens?

Rudd personally IGNORED ALL WARNINGS. Garret repeatedly warned him but Rudd wouldn't listen.

Your one eyed stance on the facts and the truth of this tragedy staggers belief.

You standing up for Rudd and the last labor govt on this shows you do not care about deaths in the workplace.

the architect of the scheme says, arguing that if they can afford to go to Europe...

That is just plain dumb. He/the article refers to Australians with studen loans working overseas in well paying jobs, not , for example, unemployment beneficiaries.

Airfares to UK/Europe aren't that expensive either.
