For most, it is not a preference.

About eye colour, blue is recessive.

there are, in the simple model, two genes involved, one from each parent. So two brown eyed parents can have a blue eyed child, if each of them has a blue recessive gene that they pass onto that child.

eye colour is more complex than that though, with many more genes involved. 

There are also mutations which result in colours that you would not be able to guess from the parents and grandparents colouring.
