Bad judgement, trusting somebody who they should not have trusted.  Once they got to Syria or Iraq some may have done some terrible things, some may have just witnessed atrocities.  Most probably engaged in some battles with Syrian or Iragi forces, fired some shots, experienced missiles exploding near by, saw some injured and dead or dying people, and found out that it is not the fun they thought it would be, and that death on the battle field is not something heroic and noble.  Who knows what happened, therefore, if any of them manages to get out of there they should be dealt with on individual basis.  Then given good spanking, banned from using internet, and watched by the authorities.  One of those tracking bracelets would be a good idea.

Which make them deserters. Deserters are not viewed with fondness by any army. In fact they were summarily shot in some cases.

An army like ISIS with the archaic morals they have would have no qualms in beheading them.
