Lyndal, it's the little possums who can prove a challenge... ha ha.
Are the bigger ones more settled? More confident?
I don't know... I won't put my hands near the big ones, ha ha.
The little possum had emerged from the doorway, sat up and licked it's fur.
Somebody is trying to get cool...
As I watched, it sat up in the doorway and then it got what I can only describe as a surprised look...
Then it fell over, backwards, into the doorway, and lay there sprawled on it's back...
The trouble of being a little possum born in the Winter is that Summer comes as a fair surprise...
I'll go and check on it at about half hourly intervals...
I'm sure it's hot, and seeking relief from the heat, but it doesn't hurt to keep an eye open.
The fun never ends, here.... ha ha

A quick look...
Somebody has now curled themselves into a loose ball shape...
If that's more comfortable.... ha ha.
There are days when I know, for a fact, that I don't understand possums... ha ha.

Dom, drinking, yes, swimming in, not so much.
I don't know about spraying them with water, I haven't wanted to stretch the friendship that far, yet, ha ha.
Not for want of trying...
I built a possum house with air vents on the sides, and the roof.
They hated it - too airy...
I glued some old tiles to a board that could slip neatly into the doorway corridor of a house - something cool to sleep on...
I'm not sleeping on that - it radiates my heat back at me...
So I'm not going to say I've given in, entirely, but there's really only so far I can go in terms of well meaning gestures aimed at their comfort... ha ha.
I know they're adapted to, suited to the environment.
I know that they don't just know the land, they are the land, and that I should trust them, they know what they're doing, but there is that nagging voice - damn you Marcus Aurelius - Be of use... ha ha.

I understand - had thought of a spray bottle for the littlies.
As you have said - they will adapt to their conditions.

I had thought, very fleetingly, about getting half a bucket of water and emptying it over the little possum.
I had thought...
It occurs to me that last time I had a bucket of water tipped over me I didn't feel cool and refreshed, so much as homicidal.
To paraphrase Jesus, "Do unto others... Or possibly more to the point, Don't, if you get my drift...".
So no, no bucket of water... ha ha.
Trust yourself to trust them that they will be okay.
It's alright to be concerned, but not to the point where it becomes a concern.
That sounds very "Zen", ha ha.

It's hot, today...
I'm going to lie in the corridor...
Motionless...
Like this...
Heh heh heh heh heh....
But I'm okay...
Would you prefer me to be cute, and keeping cool?
I can do that, too, ha ha.
