He appears to have become addicted to buying antiques and collectables.
He and Mum always had an interest in certain antiques/collectables. They have quite a lot around their house. Mum also has an owl collection which comprises of 1000's of owls.
Lately dad has been going a bit crazy on ebay and buying heaps more.
He says they are to good a price to ignore. He says Mum will love them.
I have 2 concerns. One is that 3 years ago he told me his 5 year plan. If Mum is still the same after 5 years, he will sell the house and buy a small unit near her. Well, its 5 years next June. There is no way he will fit all of these things he is buying in a small unit. And i fear he is gonna have a hard time parting with them.
My 2nd concern is, what if my dad dies? My sister and I will have the task of getting rid of all of it and we have no idea what any of it is worth. I know some of the antiques are quite expensive but neither of us have the time to go through and research each item.
Im now trying to work out a way of talking to Dad about this without him getting defensive or angry

I'm sorry This must be really hard for you.
Could you perhaps start by asking your Dad if he remember his 5year plan?
and see what his response is.
Perhaps suggest that if he plans to downsize closer to your Mum that he won't have room and may infact run out of room where he is if he keeps buying things.I see that he is perhaps trying to aviod making those decisions and also maybe not wanting to accept that your Mum may go on as she is.He is wanting to buy nice things for when she is better and that gives him hope.
I can understand the 'retail therapy' and it won't be easy and he may get defensive and make excuses.I think though that reminding him of what he said to you and asking what his plans are now may be a good way to start?
