Federal election 2019: Tony Abbott blasted over 'tasteless' Bob Hawke tribute

hopefully after tomorrow tony 'onion' abbott will be a bad memory

unlike Bob Hawke who will forever be remembered as a great leader.

even though he may have been a flawed man.

While I'm not sure this is the right thread to comment on, I agree with you David. Abbott's comments were insensitive, inappropriate and very poorly timed. What I can't help thinking is that he made them to intentionally harm the Liberals. And to think he was our Prime Minister.

Abbott doesn't know just how to keep his mouth shut. It was not the time nor the place to say such things. Common courtesy!
Yes, Hawke will be remember for many things.

I didn't think his comment was too bad, myself.

I think we have far too many people these days who get upset about very little.

Abbott said what he thought and he said it plainly, that some of Hawke's key achievements were more Liberal than Labor in character.

He also said Hawke was Australia's greatest Labor PM, which i think is quite a glowing tribute.

I don't know that Hawke would have minded. He might not have agreed and had a debate about it, but let's face it, he was a plain speaker himself.

I wonder if he could even be in politics these days, with the political correctness level as it is.

And it would be our loss.

RIP Mr Bob Hawke, I admired your work ethics and your character, you changed Australia for the better with your Prime Ministership. You will be very sadly missed. My hero.

Thank goodness I am not the only one who thinks Tony Abbott was not so out of order as some people think.

I don't like Tony at all but I don't see what is so wrong with what he said.

Bob Hawke was a man of the people.

He wasn't afraid to enjoy & laugh with us - America's Cup - for instance.

I think - like most of us - he had ' a foot  & a heart ' in both camps.

Tony may be a Diiick - but I don't think he got it wrong - this time.

I missed it, what did he say ?

Sounds like the outrage bus came to town.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott has been criticised for a "tasteless" tribute to Bob Hawke, who he described as having a "Labor heart but a Liberal head".

And what is so wrong with that?

As far as I am concerned that is what made him possibly the best Labor PM that I can remember.

we are being told this election will be close (who knows right)

BUT

lets say it is close

the last thing you need 2 days from voting day is anyone on your side saying anything 'tasteless' about a former PM who has just died.

of course taste can be different from me to you, but why risk offending swinging voters?

just sayin
