In my slave to Burmese days I also had a fishtank.

One of the Burmese liked to sit on top of the tank (highest position in the lounge).  The glass top had the usual triangles of glass removed at the corners and one day she sat in her usual position on the tank...and accidentally dangled her tail into the water.

It wasn't the tank water that sent her flying off in a panic - it was the fish who took a bite thinking her tail was food. 🙂

i replaced the glass covers with perspex as i felt there was a good chance rosie could break the glass making for a wet cat and water everywhere.

possibly a trip to the vet too.

only trouble with perspex is it warps requiring flipping over every 4 days.

so i do my water changes every 4 days.

the large tank is looking great but my smaller tank is a mess, plants and rocks covered in black algae. i think i will strip it down soon and do a full rebuild.

or maybe even close it down permanatly.

On the 3ft tank (this was some years ago) the fluoro light unit was chunkier and took up more space.  Since 'the incident' she would sit on that instead...especially as I moved it forward so there was less space on the glass to sit.  Eventually she gave up.

On the 3ft tank I had a new glass top cut - very very thick with beautiful rounded edges.  I drew a full size template and took it to a glass cutting business.  They were very amused with my request.  Apparently they'd never been asked to cut a fish tank glass top before.  They did a fabulous job but it was so heavy that it was hell carrying it from the shop - on a tram - to where my car was.  That top was definitely cat-proof.

You'll definitely have to strip the tank down.  That algae lurks in the gravel as well.  I don't keep fish any more.  Once my arthritis got very painful there was no way I could manage the water changes.
