Many of the backpackers already have.

They should have been strongly encouraged to leave much earlier, although apparently some of them did try, but had flights cancelled or didn't have enough money in reserve to pay the high prices when trying to change flights.

Now they want the Australian government (ie. taxpayers) to give them food and accommodation until they can leave. Christmas Island is a thought.
