So Tharunicaa is granted a visa but not the rest of the family?

The rest of the family has not been found to be owed Australia's protection and they have lost all possible appeals.

I dont understand it at all, can someone explain it to me  pleasee?

The poor family having that hanging over their heads for so long.

from the link:

While the decision is a win for the family, it does not force the government to grant her a visa or let them return home. It merely means the minister needs to properly decide whether to allow her to apply for a visa.

Just give this poor family residency. This would be a great humanitarin gesture by this govt. They deserve it..

For goodness sakes , under the circumstances just grant that family amnesty ! WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC

the government is afraid that letting them stay would set a precedent. So, they will do whatever it takes to send them back . . . regardless of the cost involved or how much the Biloela community want them to stay.

Heartless is the word that comes to mind.

Either way, they will probably have to stay put until the Virus is under control.

Are they still quaranting COVID ppl on Christmas Island?

I realize that this would create a precident but to play with peoples' emotions like that is horrendous.  Let them stay.  Create a precedent then deal with other cases as they appear.  It can be done.

as of Sept last year,.. it cost taxpayers $4.5 Million in legal fees and costs to keep them locked up on Christmas Island.. it will be more by now

And that's the problem. After spending millions to keep them in detention, I doubt if Dutton will want to risk losing face by admitting it was  all a huge waste of taxpayers money.
