Nobody's saying policing isn't a high risk occupation...

Sounds like once again it may be due to incompetence.

Apparently someone ran a red light at speed.

They probably do not get paid enough and I think an additional 2 week holiday sometime during winter would reduce stress somewhat.

However, they were not on-duty. So just a couple of more victims of an idiot.

So being "off-duty" automatically qualifies as victims of misadventure by an unfortunate idiot ?

No I think what Dave is saying is that the police officer did not die while at work.

You are much more likely to die at work if you are a

Australia's most dangerous professions:
  • Agriculture, forestry and fishing.  ie Farmer
  • Transport, postal and warehousing. ie truck driver
  • Construction. ie electrician
  • Manufacturing. ie factory worker
  • Wholesale trade. ie warehouse worker
  • Mining. plant operator
  • Health care and social assistance. ie Policeman
  • Public administration and safety. ie office worker

given that

The leading cause of workplace deaths was overwhelmingly motor vehicle accidents. Roughly 40% of workplace deaths occurred in transportation incidents. Other leading causes were fall/slips and trips, deaths from being struck by objects or equipment, and exposure to harmful chemicals. Aug 5, 2019

It is convenient for the media to "sensationalize" the report on the Police officers death because it is topical and more hits for MSM means more income.

I wonder iwhat the other victims involved  in the accident did for a living??

The media might " sensationalise" the death of a police officer because maybe possibly they and the army are the only organisations that are ultimately maintaining societies lawful order and so stopping Australia from sliding into violently factionalised gangland economic and social anachy
