hello, if I request total from seller and commit to buy
once the seller responds do I then get to checkout and use a discount code?
or does the sale just complete?

Once the seller uploads the total charges you just go through checkout as normal and put in the discount code you have.
Note that the codes are often seller or item specific.

Add the items to the cart and test the code to see if it applies before committing.
Then request total if there are postage discounts offered by the seller.
That way you get the total, applying the discount code before you commit in checkout.
