I wonder if it would help to be notified of replies by default after starting a thread, and then people can disable this option if they know they are coming back or don't want replies in their normal mailbox.

Far too many people start threads and then seem to forget about them. Occasionally people have come back after weeks, maybe because they needed something else. Sometimes they have totally disappeared after asking a question.
