listing PU as leather :(

I am getting really fed up with items listed under the wrong category eg. material: leather and then the item turns out to be faux leather (or silk, or cotton). I have been trying to buy some leather flats but more than 70% of the search results I get are for PU shoes listed in the leather (rather than synthetic) category. The same for silk, cotton and other expensive materials. I know I can report the item as listed in under an incorrect category but there are literally thousands of deceptively listed items every time I do a search.

I would like to know if anyone else has experience of large numbers of deceptively listed items and also if there is any support out there to lobby eBay for a 'crack down' line so that those of us who believe in ethics can let eBay know when we have spotted a trend toward a particular exploitative selling practice (not limited to a handful of sellers - those should be handled with individual reports) which we believe is undermining the integrity of eBay. I'd love to hear what others think of raising the ethical bar on this issue.

Thanks in advance for your comments 🙂

We sell bridle leather items and only use 2 suppliers who are renowned as having some of the best leather in the world. It's expensive, but it is high quality. We hardly ever get sales online because of the price of the items, but at shows when customers can see, feel and smell it we have superb sales. The reason.......

Similar problem to the 'faux' crowd.  Have a look on eBay and everyone's selling the "best quality leather", when in fact they're selling tat, it's the chipboard of the leather world.  Scraps of random leather, pulped and dyed some hideous colour, then extruded into a sheet and a thin vinyl layer over the top and bottom.  Have you ever seen a bright blue or bright pink cow? The "leather" is also bright blue or bright pink all the way through, genuine leather is dyed on the top, scratch it and you'll get to the natural colour.

These "best quality leather" items sell for a few dollars, when genuine hide would cost twice that just to cut a strip.  It would breach any advertising code if they made that claim on a TV advert or in a magazine, but it's fair game online. Making claims of high quality is easy to do when the customer can't see or compare it to anything, and is also basically deceptive but very widespread. It'll never be stopped.

luvmydog_downunder you completely missed the point of this thread!!

goldengirl042 I know what you mean, i am also sick of having to go through thousands of items, which are absolutely nothing like what I want.  There was a time I was looking for art deco jewellery in antique section and getting cheap Chinese rubbish not even vaguely resembling art deco.  or looking for woollen jumpers.  The only thing to do is to report them for being listed in wrong category.  But, there is so many, I just could not be bothered to look any more.
