Recently bid on an item but was unsuccessful,2 days later the same item is re listed,if the successful buyer did not want the item ,Why was I not the given a chance to purchase as I was the next highest bidder?

Any number of reasons. A seller isn't obliged to offer it to the next highest bidder.

You can always bid on it again. You may be successful this time

Does it say that it is relisted?
The seller may have had a second item the same so it is not the same item at all.
