On top of that, the Australian Government is going to impose the GST at 10% on all overseas trading in Ebay.  This looks like we will soon have a 15%GST before the next elections. It also means that Australian buyers will not only be paying the exhorbinate postage costs that come out of the US and the UK but as these are services we will also be paying 10% more to cover GST.

 

All of these extra costs will be killing E-Commerce transactions with Ebay, Amazon, etc. in Australia. It's bad enough that we have the highest living expenses in the world and get nothing for our tax dollars, now we will no longer be able to buy items from overseas that we don't have in our shops anyway or are so expensive here, the average Aussie can't afford them.

Thanks for your input phoenix10830419. This indeed is very sad. I'm actually now going to reduce buying on ebay. Global Shipping / Pitney was the poison but now there are other bad things.

GST means GO STUPID TAX as the fools will believe me when I say I'll never bring it in but when I am elected again, I'll bring it in. Q: Aaah who said that ????

Why are you buying from a 'friend' through eBay?

Why is the 'friend' using the GSP rather than USPS?

Why do you consider them a friend, when they are shafting you?

This is part of the new paypal terms......it is no longer free to send money to family and friends overseas.

As to the rest of your story.....it all sounds very suss.   Are you or your friend trying to avoid ebay/paypal fees?  If the GSP is being used it certainly sounds like that.  The GST component of the transaction is very high if the GSP is used as Pitney Bowes charges a substantial fee to collect it....ebay does not.

I'd like to know what sort of world they live in if they think we've got the highest living expenses in the world.

As for the rest, it just doesn't make sense for friends to do anything through ebay!  A friend and I often send money through pp when we sell each other stuff but no way would we ever get ebay involved!

I thought paypal have always charged a cross-border fee on personal payments.  Maybe they didn't if there was no currency conversion, ie. Person A sends AUD and person B (living overseas) receives AUD.  They'd still have to convert it to their own currency later so paypal would get their fees, just at a different time.  Perhaps people never realised this and thought they weren't paying any fees at all.

In the past it was free to send money overseas if you used paypal or bank account funds but I believe there was a charge if you used a credit card.

Now there are no free transactions for personal payments.
