I think that's a good question.
Monitors do vary but usually they don't show a completely different colour.
What i find is more likely to happen is a photo itself can fail to show a colour accurately.
In this case though, I suspect the colour showing to most of us on our computers is pretty much the colour of the bowl. Some might call it more a cranberry shade but whatever, the buyer saw that too and she still bought. She didn't query you which I would have if I had been after a dark purple shade.
On the bright side, at least she gave you positive feedback about your packaging.
On the other hand, she may be working up to a 'not as described' claim which I think would be quite unfair in a lot of ways.
