As regards the OP's situation, if you are going to sell items of over $1000 it's worthwhile having a store, as auction and BIN fees for stores still have the sliding rate (NOT books).

FVF Fees for a $4000 auctioned spar (with a store) would be
75* .079 + (925*.05) + 3000 *.035 = 157.18.

Add in the $20 monthly store fee and it's more expensive than before, but the price has doubled rather than quadrupled.

Works out as a fee of less than 5%. Our local auction house charge between 15% and 20% (plus gst) to both buyers and sellers... (Though mind you, you don't have to worry about returns or paypal chargebacks for them).

Oops, spar = spa.

(That's one expensive piece of wood in my previous post).

They charged me over $400 in fees to sell a spa. Why would I want to be a store to pay over $150 in fees in selling a spa anyway. Its cheaper to make a new account and have it capped at $49.95 and no more to pay. Its easier and much cheaper this way, than having a store, or being a powerseller. Ebay fees are shocking.

I understand your frustration, ridiculous fees

Monkey see, monkey do?

This applies to me, but I still choose to list here as I know I have a far greater chance of selling?

And if I drag up OLD threads, I might get the 3% of members who use these boards to look at my stuff.
