Hi

I'm embarassed to say that I got caught with one of the H-19 ladies. I made a bid...then realised the item was a reproduction after reading your blog.

So, unfortunately the bid stood.   The item even came in its own polystyrene box.  lol

To be fair...the seller did make it clear that the item was not old and made no reference to Barsony.   However, the H-19 stamp really does play with the idea it  could be a Barsony.

Any way.....a lesson for me.

Thanks for the blog!

My Barsony "look-a-like" is attached for others to be wary of.

cheers

Neil

Hello Neil,

I am very sorry to hear that you tripped up but I don't think there is a collector amongst us that has not at some time. It is part of the learning curve and it sharpens your wits and confession is the best way to avoid further mistakes. I believe that there are other numbers turning up now and this is the start of a flood of copies.

It is sad as it will affect the values of good Barsony pieces until the market finds out the truth again. I know that Barsony pieces do vary and there is no hard and fast rule for recognition but the bad ones do stand out like sore thumbs.

Thanks for your input,

Regards,

Pip

I bought one of these at an Antique Centre in Blackheath - I was intrigued that someone had reproduced them (and it was reduced to $35). The person at the front counter advised they have been around since early 2011. Then I found this thread.

There's a different one listed now that looks very suspect - again a figure rather than a lamp with atypical and quite poorly executed white decoration. Two letters and an X marking.

I would probably buy it for $35 too, but it is listed as genuine.

Has anyone seen any other examples?

Hi...i have seen the following two "look-alikes"

I think the red one is genuine...and the the one with the white painted head bowl is a reproduction of the red one.

I think your message may be about the white bowled lady. It is a definite copy!

The details are exactly copied...however the copy does not have defined features ..like fingers  lol.

Any way....be warned.

cheers

I just saw the lady you were talking about. Badly painted white flower necklace and stripy skirt. The flat base gives it away as a likely copy.  The look of the base along with the poor paintwork plus the marking sends out warning warning. :0

Yes - the " Hawaiian" one. Not nice. The small ones I would never consider Barsony - probably vintage though.

Moss was working for Royal Doulton prior to coming here and working with Daisy Merton and then for our family from 1946 according to the other half of Worthington and Comber a few years ago. So any Moss barsony would have been one or the other 🙂

hi,

i've only recently started collecting beautiful barsony ceramics. i just noticed your comment about the flat bases being likely copies. could you please have a look at the following listing and let me know if she is a genuine barsony? would really appreciate it. also, do you know if this item is meant to be a vase? item listing number - 261028818812

cheers, george

p.s. great forum by the way. i had a feeling those h-19s were fake.
