IMO the big advantage to Australia of the post WW11 immigration, British, European, Italian, Greeks and Jewish immigrants  was that they assimilated and became part of the mainstream community.

Many came to work on the Snowy River Scheme which would not have been achieved without the immigrants.

No government handouts in those days.   Many famiilies living at Villawood Immigration Centre until they got on their feet, which they did. Many didn't speak English but worked hard to learn.

We needed them and they needed a new beginning.  These people helped make Australia what it is today......heaven on a stick.

Assimilation is the key word.

I know plenty of Italians and greeks who cannot speak english after 30 years.

Asians who haven't assimilated.

Assimilation is a phrase aimed at certain groups that does not exist.

Large building jobs like dams? When do we have those?

Lets all give OP a big applause to trying to deflect the 28 boats that ahve arrived since the election win.

Why ask for ideas or reverse the debate Poddster when you voted for a party who told Australia they had a plan?

TWho also said they would be transparent

who also said they would listen to the wishes of the people

Big bag of fail and your polishing brass on the titanic!

ICEBERG DEAD AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

28 boats that ahve arrived since the election

were do they come up wih this stuff?

i quess in their minds they believe it

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I know plenty of Italians and greeks who cannot speak english after 30 years.

Asians who haven't assimilated.

Topside.....I know some too.

However,if you read my post the subject of my comment was those immigrants who came here immediately and shortly after the end of WW11.

Not those who subsquently came here in the 1970's and later. .

They didn't have a brass razoo, and on arrival they were offered menial jobs and earned their keep and were thankful, there were no demands on their benefactors. Most worked very hard at tasks the the average Aussie would not touch. We owe the advances in infrastructure to them. Among those people working side by side were doctors, lawyers, judges, professors and people from all walks of life. They brought their knowledge, culture, work ethic and attittude with them.

Through their own efforts most prospered, without being pampered and spoon fed.

I see no evidence of those attributes in the current lot, sad, but true

Where do you get your evidence from? Do you work with refugees or asylum seekers?

I work with refugees and I see LOADS of evidence of the atttributes Australians admire and respect in "the current lot" and more "recent lots" and "older lots".

What do you think about the Vietnamese refugees in Australia?

“I’ve got my purse and my gift and my gloves and my selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor and my monoamine oxidase inhibitor and I have my anti-anxiety disco biscuits and I am ready to go. I am really ready!” Sheila

I know Italians and greeks who arrived in many periods (45/55/65) whose 'husbands did not let them learn English, much less drive a car'.

As I stated Assimilation is a myth.
