I've never had to adjust myself in public. It's the construction workers, tradies and AFL players that seem to do it the most. And they seem to be completely oblivious of their surroundings when doing it.

They are just checking to make sure that their precious possessions are still there and in good condition.  Insecurity.  😮

The thing is, if you say to men "how would you like it if women went around "adjusting" their knickers etc all the time?"........they smile and say they wouldn't care !
