For the life of me I cannot understand why our Government won't/can't see the HUGE possibilities with irrigating parts of our desert country to grow food. No pests, fresh food, employment, no imports and if we grew more than we needed we could export.
We can tap into deep water aquifers out there......it can be done at not a huge cost.
It is not a lack of growers in Australia. We can grow more than what our population needs. It's the Giant Supermarket chains that won't pay for the healthy food our farmers and fishermen can produce. Growers are going broke and digginf fruit and vegetables back into the ground, because of the greed of the Giant Supermarkets. It's ll about mega profits, and shareholders in those companies are just as bad. Nothing much the Government can do about it.
But we can make a difference with concious and selective shopping.

Why don't the growers advertise and do business DIRECT with say, a co-op representing consumers....then we could buy direct from growers thru a co-op....so that we can do away with the middlemen?

A great idea, Paints, but there may be legalities involved and the Big Guns will find a way to squash it. Although I think it is worth a try. Needs some young, energetic person to start the ball rolling. I would try if I was at least 30 years younger.

don't know why my post above turned out blank but here's what it was meant to say:
We don't even need to irrigate deserts, we have plenty of fertile land to grow enough to feed Australia, with plenty left over for export.
Farmers ploughed their produce into the ground in the early 90's thanks to the Hawke/Keating open border free trade lower tariffs policy.
We should put tariffs back into place to ensure food sovereignty for Australia.

Actually if you were honestly educated into the LNP policies you would see that there is something called the Northern Plan and that is exactly what they are going to do.. irrigate the northern parts, harvest water for this irrigation and make the Northern part of the country the food bowl.
It is a huge factor into the reason the the LNP was elected up here because they made a policy of not forgetting us.

I had race up to the shop last night to buy a can of tomato soup for my bolognese.
After I picked up and Edgell and a Heinz (NZ) and put them back I found a Campbells (Aus) which hade AUSTRALIAN MADE in big print across the front. I looks like Aus companies are trading in on the new found loyalty of the Aus consumer. Good on em.

We don't need to set up special tax haven zones for people to grow food. There are plenty of rural areas in which to grow crops already. What needs to change is the culture of looking at price above quality and the culture which allows and encourages giants to bully the small players into selling their products at or below cost.
