Speaking to Channel Seven news, Ken Thorpe said he had “no idea” his son was gay and was shocked by his decision to come out of the closet.

I would guess that this is why Ian has always denied it - for family reasons and fair enough.  He owes the public nothing in regard to his personal life nor any reasons why he has taken so long to "come out".  I hope he now has peace in his life and be remembered as the great athlete he was for Australia.
