Racing is clearly a profit making industry..I have been around horses all my life..Have even rescued a few.. I know of many who train race & pacers( trotters)..I see countless end up in the sales yards..local knackery..resold ect..Sadly these horses generally are very highly strung and do not make suitable riding mounts once re-homed for the general rider..Money is spent on the horses and yes care is mostly great when they are in training and doing well..How ever whilst there are some who are compassionate most horses are considered useless when they dont meet the standard..They dont all retire nicely in lifelong paddock retreats..
Even the horses that are given the best care in the world are only maintained for the promise of a potential fortune to be made..After the race career is over a few are put to stud so more profit will be made from theier off spring. The melbourne cup is an extreme race ..It is made to test the horse in every way..Even the fittest person can sucumb to heart failure when pushed over the limit.. Horses are no different..phar lap was an example of this..His heart was freakish and twice the size of a normal horses heart..It was this reason that enabled him to do the unthinkable.
Horse racing will not stop..Its money that keeps the industry on going..We talk about other animal exploits like bull fighting..rodeo's..ect but try to glamourise the races..really the bottom line is the animals are just considered dispensablble
I live for the day when all people can see past profit and appreciate the horse for what it is a creature of true magnificence and a right to live a natural life like us all
